Abortion / Medical Termination of Pregnancy

What is Abortion / Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP)?

Abortion, also known as Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), is a medical procedure used to terminate an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy. It is a legal and safe option for women who choose not to continue their pregnancy due to personal, social, medical, or health-related reasons. The procedure involves the removal of pregnancy tissues from the uterus using medication or surgical methods, depending on the gestational age of the pregnancy.

Types of Abortion / Medical Termination of Pregnancy

There are two primary methods of abortion depending on the stage of pregnancy and the patient's health condition:

  • Medical Abortion (Non-Surgical): This method involves the use of medication to terminate an early pregnancy (up to 9 weeks of gestation). This method is safe, effective, and does not require anesthesia or hospitalization in most cases.
  • Surgical Abortion: Surgical abortion is performed when the pregnancy has progressed beyond 9 weeks or when medical abortion is not suitable.

When to See a Gynaecologist for Abortion / MTP?

Women who suspect an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy, those facing medical complications during pregnancy, or those seeking pregnancy termination for personal or social reasons should consult a gynecologist. Seeking medical advice at the earliest ensures safe and legal abortion services, minimizing health risks and ensuring the patient's overall well-being. The gynecologist will provide a thorough evaluation, discuss the available options, and guide the patient through the most suitable and safe method of abortion.
