Myomectomy

What is Myomectomy?

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove uterine fibroids, also known as myomas or leiomyomas, from the uterus while preserving the uterus. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus, commonly affecting women of reproductive age. These fibroids can cause various symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure on the bladder or rectum, frequent urination, and difficulty conceiving. Myomectomy is recommended for women who experience severe symptoms from fibroids or those who wish to preserve their uterus for future pregnancy. This procedure effectively relieves fibroid-related symptoms and improves the chances of a successful pregnancy in women dealing with infertility due to fibroids.

Types of Myomectomy Procedures

There are several types of myomectomy procedures based on the size, location, and number of fibroids present. The gynecologist determines the most suitable type of myomectomy depending on the patient’s condition and medical history.

  • Abdominal Myomectomy (Open Myomectomy): This procedure involves making an incision in the abdomen to access and remove large or multiple fibroids from the uterus. It is generally performed under general anesthesia and is suitable for women with large or deep fibroids.
  • Laparoscopic Myomectomy (Minimally Invasive Surgery): In this procedure, small incisions are made in the abdomen, and a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera) is inserted to visualize and remove the fibroids. Laparoscopic myomectomy is less invasive, offers a shorter recovery time, and causes minimal scarring.
  • Hysteroscopic Myomectomy: This type of myomectomy is performed to remove fibroids that develop inside the uterine cavity (submucosal fibroids). A hysteroscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus to remove the fibroids. There are no external incisions, and recovery is usually quick.

When is Myomectomy Recommended?

Myomectomy is recommended for women who experience moderate to severe symptoms caused by uterine fibroids or those who wish to preserve their fertility. Symptoms that may indicate the need for myomectomy include heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, or fertility issues. Women who are planning to conceive and have fibroids that may interfere with pregnancy are often advised to undergo myomectomy to improve their chances of a successful pregnancy. Additionally, myomectomy is recommended for women who do not want to undergo a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and wish to retain their uterus.

Benefits of Myomectomy

The primary benefit of myomectomy is the effective removal of uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus, allowing women to maintain their fertility and reproductive health. After myomectomy, many women experience significant relief from fibroid-related symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure on the bladder or rectum. For women who have been struggling with infertility due to fibroids, myomectomy significantly improves the chances of conception and a successful pregnancy. Additionally, myomectomy offers an alternative to hysterectomy, allowing women to preserve their uterus and avoid premature menopause.

When to Consult a Gynaecologist?

It is important to consult a gynecologist if you experience persistent symptoms of uterine fibroids such as heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, severe pelvic pain, pressure on the bladder or rectum, or difficulty in conceiving. Early diagnosis and treatment of fibroids can prevent complications and improve fertility outcomes. Women who have been diagnosed with fibroids and wish to preserve their uterus or improve their chances of conception should discuss the option of myomectomy with their gynecologist. Prompt medical attention and expert surgical care can help ensure a successful outcome and long-term relief from fibroid-related symptoms.
